Is my IT job secure ?

I was reading this the other day..the HOT TOPIC right now..!!Just wanted to share it...!

This question haunts almost every IT employee these days especially in India after the U.S economy slowdown . I’m also a part of this sector now and whenever I hear news of rupee appreciation or US market slowdown , this question araises in my mind .

So Is my job secure ?

The answer is partly “Yes“ and “No” . When the companies had good margins , they left a lot of things unnoticed . Now when they found out that their position is not secure and margins are decreasing with the appreciation of Rupee , they are looking into themselves . They are debugging and tracing each and every process inside to avoid any unnecessary costs . In the last 2 years , many of you might had noticed that these companies recruited a lot of people in thousands . So these people became unncessary costs to these companies now [ Especially those who are not upto the mark ] . So they are firing them after observing their performance in the previous quarters . Some companies which are in news on these kind of issues are IBM , TCS , Accenture . While IBM fired entry level engineers , TCS fired experienced ones .

I don’t know why media made it such a big news , when my company just fired a bunch of 500 non performers out of 1 lakh + employees . TCS has always been known for job security and it will still hold its place as it march towards becoming global Top 10 by 2010 . I’m here only for a few days and I can feel the security of the job I have . They never fire someone . They will ask you to resign if you are performing extremely bad .

I was recently listening to a lecture by some of my officials about the changes that are going to come in the IT industry . He was mentioning that IT industry is going to change a lot in the next generations . The rate of growth and the changes that they had seen in their entire life will be seen by in few years by us . It’s certain that we are going to face a lot of challenges and we should be ready to face them. Indian IT being a lot dependent on the U.S market so far has got a great blow because of the US economy slow down . But the companies who have a presence globally in other parts of the world like Europe are not affected worsely.

Now the other companies are also looking on global markets . As usual they have the problem of managing their talent pools . So they are recruiting everyone that comes their way . They are giving them a chance to prove and if they don’t use the chance still , they fire .I’m talking about Indian IT giants .

So summary is ..

If you are performer and you have the brains to do the job and cope with the stress , your job is secure .

But US based companies are not secure as much as Indian companies . Whenever they have losses or any issues , they go for cut down of jobs . Yahoo India has just fired 50 employees from Bangalore office . So , make your choice carefully …..

Do you have any experiences in IT industry … Either good or bad , share it with the global community with your comment ….
